As we've done the previous years, our family costumes are designed off of whatever Kate wants for her costume. The flavor this year is fairy. So we're going with a Tinker Bell theme with me as Peter Pan, Jen as Wendy, and Jane as Nana (the family dog). Teaser alert - I'll be sporting women's plus size green tights as part of my costume. Pictures to follow. I don't blame anyone if they steer clear of the blog for awhile.
In the lead up to Halloween we've gone to a couple of parties - one at our apartments and the other a famous annual neighborhood carnival put on by Jared and Jerusha Hess, the creators of Napoleon Dynamite. As you can imagine they've got all kinds of creative friends that put on an impressive show. The party benefits the Utah Food Bank with food being the price for admission. I've just been informed that I can't show any costume pictures yet, so this will just be pics from the carnival.
This years pumpkin carving offerings.
This is an authentic Kate-drawn face transferred to the pumpkin.

Jen's scared pumpkin. I think Kate really liked that something might be afraid of her instead of the other way around.

My pumpkin was Jack the Pumpkin King from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Kate decided that Jen's pumpkin was afraid of mine.

Even Janie got her own pumpkin.

Here are some pictures from the carnival. They had a snake show that also included tarantulas and scorpions. Kate kept a wary eye on a nearby scorpion while "petting" this snake.

Jared Hess dressed as King Triton. His Mer-man monologue was pretty goofy and entertaining.

I thought these posters did a good job of capturing the mood/theme of the carnival.

So did these carnie games.

A group of B-list circus performers arrived in their hippy bus and performed a variety of acts, including a mini trapeze show and a fire show. I was just worried that this girl's greasy dreds would ignite.

This accordion guy played the perfect music to set the mood.

A post from us wouldn't be complete without at least one picture of the girls. Kate was pretty excited about the prospect of giving Jane a piggyback ride but Jane wasn't so sure.

awesome. did yall paint the colored pumpkins first? love both the scared one and the nightmare before christmas one. halloween's sweet huh
You all are very good pumpkin carvers - the green one was very interesting - Scott's was very much like it's character, Kate's was cute, and Jane is just a cutie!
Overall, my vote goes to the green pumpkin for creativity. The party looks fun - post more pics of those girls!
Mom
great post, scott, you all are very talented; we're starting to get in the halloween mood here; before long we'll bust out our large plastic pumpkin, put a brick in it so it won't blow away, and scare the heck out of all the neighborhood kids
Fairies are popular these days. In fact, I'm sure the advertisers are sending subminial messages to consumers because that's the exact idea I had for our family's halloween costume (hinging on the small possibility that I actually get the costumes together) minus a little doggy. I can't wait to see pictures.
This is Jen by the way
I love all the pumpkins! I think they make up just the cutest family ever! Love the post!

I have to say scott, I thought your guns looked pretty massive so it would probably be best if you would just lay off the supplements for at least a few weeks. Other than that I liked the fact that Jane was able to have her very own pumpkin.
